Over 25 people attended the event, with a number wishing to get more involved in the running of the Fairtrade Coalition in future.

At the event, those present were invited to share news of how they had recently taken action to increase the use of Fairtrade products. Some of the answers shared are below:

  • We’ve increased the frequency of our after church FT stall – Holy Trinity, Headington Quarry
  • We have a fair trade catalogue and also run Amnesty mail order catalogue where we strive to only stock fair trade products – Fran Harvey, New Internationalist
  • We’ve run a free FT wine tasting outside the Co-op in Summertown – No name given
  • We wrote to all the shops, schools, businesses in the Summertown area suggesting they start to buy FT goods for their staff rooms – No name given
  • Cowley Deanery held a FT stall at Templars Square in FT Fortnight: sale of goods, olive oil tasting, entertainment from St Gregory the Great, tasting from the Co-op.  It was opened by Andrew Smith MP and visited by the Lord Mayor

Suggestions were also invited for what should take place in the City over the coming years to promote Fairtrade and suggestions included:

  • Encourage Council to look favourably on projects involving use of commercial premises to promote sale of FT products – no name
  • Develop a plan to make FT goods more available in other places e.g. Blackbird Leys (- not just central Oxford)
  • FT stall at events such as Fun Days and Cowley Road Carnival – to widen the range of people we can reach
  • Outreach activities to communities and groups not currently involved in Fair Trade in Oxford
  • A Fair Trade market on Broad Street
  • Re-printing the Fairtrade in Oxford brochure
  • A “Welcome to Oxford a Fairtrade City” sign/ a sort of Fairtrade blue plaque
  • A concert in South Parks using contacts with FoxFM with Fair Trade stalls at the event
  • Food and wine tasting at lots of events e.g. Cowley Road Carnival, local fetes, street parties, fund days, school fetes
  • Promote events in the different regions of the city.  Respond favourably to initiatives in regions that need seed corn funding
  • Children’s Food Festival 2009
