As we begin Fairtrade Fortnight 2018, I’m delighted to take over the role of OFTC Chair from Carol Wills, who will continue to contribute her wisdom and long experience in fair trade as a member of the steering group. At the end of January, we had a wonderful AGM, graced by Safia Minney of the ethical clothing and shoe companies People Tree and Po-Zu. Safia informed and inspired the almost 100-strong audience with her refreshing brand of corporate leadership, demonstrating that it is possible to resolutely put ethics and the environment first and still be commercially successful.
The following week we held a Strategy Meeting at which we welcomed members old and new to discuss the direction we want to take OFTC in light of the new challenges and opportunities for fair trade. New challenges in the shape of a more crowded and confusing space for ethical shopping, and new opportunities in the form of a more conscious, more connected up and coming generation.
We agreed that we want to leverage Oxford’s global reach to spread the word on fair trade far and wide, that we want to support Oxford City Council to truly own and take pride in its Fairtrade status, and that we want to help drive the wider debate on the direction of fair trade. We agreed we needed further discussion on whether or not to widen the scope of the Coalition beyond Fairtrade to embrace other approaches to ethical trade. We also agreed to refresh our relationship with past members and rekindle the sense of being a coalition of fair trade businesses and organisations working together to keep driving fair trade forward so that we get ever closer to fair trade being the norm rather than a niche.
We warmly invite like-minded Oxford organisations to join the coalition for mutual support and promotion, and also invite the people of Oxford to join our events, buy fair trade products from our shops and be part of the global call to make all shopping fair and ensure that the women and men who grow, make and transport our purchases can feed and clothe their own families. The Fairtrade Fortnight events below are just the start!
